New Puzzle Quest Game…

Filed under: Games by Nathan @ 2:19 pm

Puzzle Quest was the best game of 2007. Bioshock was cool, but didn’t hold my interest long enough to finish it. Maybe some other year. And while Portal held my attention like few games in history, it only held that attention for about three massively entertaining hours. So it was with great glee that I read on Gamasutra that there will be another game. In space! With my PC languishing in the basement, if I game it’s on the DS, so between a new Puzzle Quest game and the upcoming Civ port, I’ll be content for a very, very long time.

Funny. While I agree that puzzle quest is a good game, (I bought it for both the DS and the XBox 360), it is by no means the best game of the year. As far as I can tell, (and yes I have completed the main quest and all side quests), Puzzle Quest is just a shameless ripoff of bejeweled. It’s a fun ripoff, but it’s no more fun than the game it owes it’s existence to. Game of the year is hands down Call of Duty 4 – Modern Combat. It is innovative, gorgeous, and has the best solo campaign and competitive multiplayer of any game this year, including Bioshock and Halo 3.

Shameless ripoff of Bejeweled? Well, the combat may resemble the gameplay of the casual classic, if you play Puzzle Quest the same way you’re playing Bejeweled you are simultaneously making it hard on yourself and not playing to the strengths of the magic system. It’s far more fun than the game to which it owes its existence. I haven’t played Call of Duty and nothing I’ve seen or heard convinces me I am missing anything.
